Gary Lake - Executive Editor
![]()
Gary Lake has been mountain biking for over 15 years now and has had a passion for everything cycle related ever since. He is a CTC-qualified trail leader and wannabe endurance racer.
Gary has always been looking for a way to give something back to the sport. With a successful career in digital media and internet marketing, and with over 10 years' experience in the industry, it was somewhat inevitable that Gary would put these skills to use in something cycle-related.
After a year in the planning and making, in February 2010 Cyclist No.1 was born.
Scott Cornish - Technical Editor
An endurance athlete since the tender age of 33, but who started out riding rigid hardtails many years before, Scott more than appreciates the performance full suspension and disc brakes now offer! With a number of podium spots in major 10 and 12 hour solo events, his attention has now turned to stage races and marathon events at home and abroad and as a fan of big mountain climbs - seeking out courses with high cumulative height gains and big descents. With a good number of years in the trade and a skilled mechanic, there isn’t much he doesn’t know about bikes. He divides his time between racing on dirt (mtb and cross), the road bike, trail running, and has recently become 29er curious (oh er).
Having spent a great deal of time on a physio bench over the years, he decided to embark on a physio degree and has spent the past 4 years dividing his time between study and racing. Fully qualified this year, he plans to specialise in sports physio.
Fi Spotswood - Features Editor
Fi Spotswood has been an endurance athlete since 2004 and has flitted
between triathlon, mountain bike racing, road racing, adventure racing and
ultra marathon running during that time.
In mountain bike racing, she has competed at 6, 12, 24 hour and multi day races with some success. More recently she has turned her hand to expedition adventure racing and divides her time between ripping up the local trails on her kona hei hei supreme, trail and mountain running and kayaking along the beautiful South West coastline. She lives in Bristol with her partner and is a lecturer in marketing at the University of the West of England.
Richard Fox - Features Contributor

Richard has been mountain biking for over 17 years,7 years on his local trails, Dartmoor. He also regularly rides away from home – usually riding each year (while doing the mechanics for others) in various events such as the Cheddar Challenge, Rough Ride, Soggy Bottom, Dyfi Enduro and twentyfour12.
All these years of riding (and breaking) bikes, has resulted in Richard acquiring the wealth of experience (and the tools) to keep his, and inevitably all his riding crew's, bikes on the trails. Richard is a Cyclist No.1 features contributor.
Jamie Richards - Nutritional Contributor
Jamie runs a private nutritional practice based in Bristol and
has clients throughout Europe.
He analyses and revises diets for his clients, and uses the most up to date nutritional supplements to help keep competing athletes and weekend warriors free from illness and injury. Training and competition stresses the body and depletes us of essential nutrients. How and when to replace these nutrients is the key to training longer and staying fit and injury free.
He also runs lectures, seminars, workshops and classes on a wide range of topics from female health to preparing for your first marathon. Jamie joins Cyclist No.1 as our expert nutritionist.
Huw Thomas - Blog Contributor
Huw lives at the foot of the South Wales valleys where his choice of mountain bike and road riding routes are seemingly endless. He enjoys riding and exploring his local routes in the Rhondda Valleys as well as travelling further afield.
His full time job with the Forestry Commission takes him all over the UK and is lucky enough to be able to take his bikes with him. After only riding a mountain bike for some 6 years, 2009 saw Huw gain his first MTB endurance race successes with a 2nd place in the Bontrager Twentyfour12 in the 24h pairs category, and 3rd place at the 10-hour solo race at the Cheddar Bikefest. In 2010 Huw completed his first 24 hour solo at the Bontrager Twentyfour12 and came 4th. Huw came 2nd at the 2011 UK and European 12-hour Solo MTB Championships, and is the 2011 UK and European 12-hour Solo Rookie Champion.
Huw set up and manages Loco BM Racing, a team of friends and endurance mountain bike racers, who have been successful at a number of endurance events. Huw is sponsored by south Wales-based suspension tuning and servicing company, Loco Tuning.
Phil Saxena - Blog Contributor
Phil Saxena has been riding mountain bikes for 20 years and has spent a good 10 of
those professionally designing and building MTB tracks. As a passionate cyclist,

runs a successful MTB trail building company, Architrail. He has worked at the
highest level of the sport with projects including the 2008 Olympic Games in
Beijing and many years on the UCI MTB World Cup circuit.

Technique Contributor - Steve Phipps

Steve Phipps is an SMBLA Mountain Bike Leader and runs MTB guiding, school and holiday company Chasing Trails in the North York Moors area.
Having biked all over the UK since the early days of the sport, a coaching and guiding business seemed the obvious way to go for Steve. Chasing Trails was born and offers bike skills courses and 1-to-1 tuition, guided days out on the Moors, and a range of UK MTB holidays.
