Not-For-Profit...

Why Not-For-Profit?

The original idea behind Cyclist No.1 was to do something for the love of (and obsession with) bikes. We also wanted to do something that would benefit the cycling community and other causes/projects that we're passionate about supporting. Therefore we made a decision very early on that any profit we might make would go towards these causes. This is one of our main aims, along with our other goals: to provide the best impartial online resource for cyclists that we can, and to find and develop new journalistic talent.

So are you a charity or something then?

No, absolutely not. It's early days and Cyclist No.1 is currently a sole trader business being run by Editor Gary Lake. Although this is a traditional 'for-profit' business model, we are openly declaring ourselves as not-for-profit. In fact, at this time nobody involved with Cyclist No.1 is taking a salary - it is run entirely by volunteers. We are currently exploring the formation of a social enterprise but there are procedures to go through and lots of work to do. We hope to get there at some point in 2010 and we will be keeping our readers updated every step of the way.

Will you ever start paying the people involved?

All being well, yes. Our goal is to become a social enterprise, and therefore our goals are social and non-profit driven. Ultimately, Cyclist No.1 is a business and there are costs to cover as there are in the running of any other business.

But you're making money, what are you doing with it?

Up until now we haven't made any money as we've been focussing on getting Cyclist No.1 up and running - to date Cyclist No.1 has been funded by the time and generosity of those involved. We will be turning our focus to generating revenue shortly, by selling advertising space and by giving friends and readers the opportunity to donate, either to the general running of the site or to specific causes/projects we're supporting.

Can I donate directly to one of the causes/projects you're supporting instead?

If you would prefer to donate directly to a cause or project instead of donating the money via Cyclist No.1, we would still be very grateful. One of the charities we're currently supporting is CLIC Sargent, as Cyclist No.1 Editor Gary Lake is raising sponsorship as part of his 24-hour mountain bike race. You can sponsor him via his JustGiving page, which will send funds directly to CLIC Sargent.
