The Cycle Show 2011 - Part 2
Apart from the lovely bikes on display at The Cycle Show there was a whole host of components on offer. With a huge bling stand from Campagnolo, which was too tempting for words, but also some less well known new or recent products from other companies including Forcefield and Capo clothing. To be honest this is what I love about shows, you think you have seen everything and then you realise you haven't! Being a techy, my favorite stand was Hope's, if only because of the CNC machined anodised multi-colured bling!
Components
ENVE Composites had a lovely looking wheel stands with custom carbon rimmed XC and FR wheelsets build around Chris King hubs - Blue 29er, Red 26er, clincher and tubular tyes!
Front and Rear 26" XC wheelset with carbon clincher rims and CK hubs - however I would probably, as with all new rims, take a chunk out of them on the first outing!
We were sent this video which was made by Saddleback using their viewpoint cams and whilst filming around and about including the ENVE, Mule Bar, For Goodness Shakes and Felt stands. Also includes some of the best bits of the BMX competition and ... a bit of me and Ross Grimmett trying out the Felt Edicts on the Demo Course. Famous at last!
Lovely lime green reservoir caps on Hope's Special Edition Evo calipers with mini 140mm saw toothed discs.
Hope's range of hydraulic disc calipers (std, Spesh edition Evos and Trials) as well as the levers.
Hopes light selection. Front lights: Vision One, New R4 (with 1000 measured lumens) and the new R8 (Eight Cree XPG LEDs , user selectable beam angles with a light output of up to 2000), and the contraversial and mental District 3 rear light.
Selection of the well known Pro2 Evo hubs and conversion caps (new ones are even easier to convert than std Pro2 if that's possible).
R4 now more suitable for a powerful helmet/head lamp due to a smaller bundle size and is significantly lighter in weight than the older Vision 4.
Some nice looking alloy anodised bash rings.
New to the frey, CNC'd chain rings - at the moment designed for 1x drive trains.
Hope carbon aero road wheels with alu braking rims and Pro 3 hubs (Pro3 RS-SP Carbon Clincher) with 50mm deep rims.
New Look Quartz XC pedals - mud clearance looks good and as durable as Time ATACs?
New Truvativ X0 branded chain guide made in conjunction with MRP with a replaceable skid plate. Available in 2 sizes and BB-Mount, ISCG or ISCG 05 mounting standards.
Apparel
The body armor company Forcefield had a big range of product including this back protector...
A plethora of flight jackets and elbow and knee/shin guards that look pretty cool.
New pads from G-Form including knees, knee/shin combo and elbows made from 'Reactive Protection Technology, a composite blend of PORON® XRD™ material and proprietary G-Form materials'. Not aimed at the downhill market but light enough for the XC/Freeride/Trail riding. We will be reviewing these pads soon!
US based company Capo have some nice tops and shorts including this contemporary ladies road jersey with retro stripes (Baco line).
Now I don't use a messenger bag or paniers but the German producer Ortleib's range looks very stylish and are 100% waterproof.
Small Zip City which comes in many colours, a style for all?
Tech/Gadgets
Contour, makers of HD video cameras, now have 3 in their range: Roam, GPS and +. The Roam above has a quick combined on/off record and operation switch on top and records in full 1080p mode. The + is for the pro's and tech meisters alike. The Contour + enables live streaming - via HDMI, Bluetooth streaming to your smartphone, 5 Megapixel Stills and GPS tracking.
The GPS model has a built in GPS receiver so you can record what and where you have ridden. The waterproof case is rated up to 60m.
They are not IP rated but this demo indicates they stand up to immersion in rain and shallow water?
The power light certainly came on and I was assured the camera had worked throughout the show!
Bit under the radar, the new eTrex series. I used to have an old Legend and Gary still uses a Vista – being a bit old school and aimed at walkers, the range has been somewhat left behind compared with even Garmin's own new bike-speicifc units. These are much smaller and more compact and now full colour display, full OS mapping and seemingly, on paper at least, a fantastic battery life off 2 replaceable AA batteries. Price is not too bad either!
There are 3 in the series the 10, 20 and 30 with the 30 having an inbuilt compass and wireless data share on top. Robust trail GPS?
eTrex Line up.
And the rest...
As Scott mentioned in his Paligap blog Torq have a vanilla flavoured energy drink. I tried it and thought it tasted like cream soda. Unusual but not unpleasant and unlike other flavours was not claggy in the throat, much cleaner tasting. Would have to drink it over several hours of riding though. At least you could vary flavours over the course of a ride!
Finally a bit of fun. These looked kinda funny. The GausWheel - Described as a cross between a unicycle, skateboard and scooter, the GausWheel is described as 'a revolutionary sports accessory, perfect for those seeking the latest adrenalin-pumping, extreme-sports alternative!' - time will tell but it is apparently worldwide and they are in their 3rd generation! The CNO1 jury is well and truely out on this one at the moment!
